Friday 6 July saw five intrepid trekkers take on the task of completing the three peaks challenge in just 24 hours.
John Groves, Dave Edgecombe, Jonathan Hooper, Jonathan Bailey, Michael Thomas and team driver and physiotherapist Mark Brayshaw all from Tonyrefail in Rhondda Cynon Taf did better than that. Not only did they complete the challenge in less than 24 hours raising £6,064 to help Macmillan Cancer Support continue to provide its vital services to people fighting cancer living in their local area.
The Refail Wayfarers scaled Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, beginning their epic challenge from Ben Nevis at 5pm, with the aim to finishing (including travelling) at Snowdon less than 24 hours later after scaling a total of 3407m.
Debbie Jones, Fundraising Manager for Rhondda Cynon Taf said: 'On behalf of everyone at Macmillan Cancer Support I would like to thank the Refail Wayfarers for their incredible effort. Their commitment to this challenge, support of the charity and their incredible donation means that we are able to help even more people fighting cancer.'
Trekking in memory of their fathers Bill Edgecombe and Ray Thomas who both passed away from cancer, Dave Edgecombe, Mike Thomas and the other members of the team initially set the huge target to reflect their challenge of raising at least £3000. They more than doubled this and have raised enough money for us to pay for a Macmillan Nurse in the local community for nearly two months.
Dave Edgecombe said: 'We are all in full support of Macmillan, I know they were a great help to my father and mother in the final weeks of his life. We wanted to raise as much money as possible for this great cause so other people could benefit from their support as well.'
