A drop-in centre that offers support and information to people affected by cancer has been such a success it has extended its opening hours. The Macmillan Information and Support Service at Easterhouse will now open for an extra eight hours as demand has been so high.
The service, which operates at The Library at The Bridge at Westerhouse Road, officially launched in March last year.
Service manager Janice Watt said:
'Demand has been really high since we opened, mainly due to the high incidence of cancer in the East End. This new service is special because we can offer support to people affected by cancer right on their doorstep.'
A comprehensive range of information on all aspects of cancer is available at the service which welcomes people from throughout East Glasgow.
The new service is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and run in partnership with East Glasgow Community Health and Care Partnership, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Culture and Sport Glasgow and Glasgow City Council.
Thanks to the kind support of charity Cancer Support Scotland Tak Tent, the service is also able to offer free access to complementary therapies and counselling. A dedicated welfare rights officer is also on hand to offer benefits advice on a regular basis.
Bowel cancer patient Frances Connor, 50, of Wellhouse, Glasgow, is grateful to the support she received at the centre.
She said:
'They gave me a lot of support and really listened to me. They also were great in terms of helping me find the solutions to some problems I was having. I’m so glad I went into the information centre at Easterhouse as I don’t know how I would have coped without them.'
The life expectancy of people living in Easterhouse is among the lowest in the UK and around 1,100 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in East Glasgow every year. In this area, lung cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in men. In women, breast cancer is the most prevalent.
The drop-in service is open at the Library at the Bridge, 1000 Westerhouse Road, Easterhouse, Glasgow G34 9JW.
Opening hours are: Monday from 4pm to 7pm, Wednesday from 10am to 4pm and Friday 10am to 4pm.
