A local lady and ex Macmillan nurse has featured in a new Channel 5 programme called ‘Celebrity Wishlist’ which aired on 10 October. Ida Parkinson, from Redditch, was nominated for the ‘Heartwarmer’ element of the show as an unsung hero.
Ida was nominated by Peter Harris, who has been a family friend for years, after she nursed Peter’s wife Chris during the final stages of her treatment for breast cancer and a brain tumour. He explains his reasons for nominating Ida: ‘In 1983, Ida was appointed the first Macmillan nurse in Worcestershire and spent her years dedicated to her hundreds of patients and their families making herself available at all times. She helped to establish a Hospice in the town and, following her retirement, was made Honorary President of the Macmillan Redditch committee.'
To this day, she is still fundraising, helping others and is seen by many as someone who can offer strong counsel and be relied on.’
The show, sponsored by The Health Lottery, surprised Ida to thank her for volunteering so much of her time. Ali Bastian, the shows presenter, told Ida’s story before presenting her with a gift in recognition of all that she has done.
