(From L-R) Mike Kazer and Andrew Gifford
On the weekend of Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July, spare a thought for Andrew Gifford and Mike Kazer, who will be taking part in the epic challenge Race to the Stones- a 100km 2 day run from the Chilterns in Oxfordshire to the North Wessex Downs.
The event is effectively 2 ultra marathons over 2 consecutive days, which really will be pushing their bodies to the limit. But they have a very worthy reason for wanting to take on the challenge.
Andrew’s younger brother Dave, 35, who lives in Meanwood in Leeds, is currently undergoing chemotherapy for a 16cm cancerous tumour on his Kidney so Andrew and Mike are taking on the challenge as a way of saying thank you to a charity that has helped them during this difficult time.
Andrew says, 'You hear the ratio 1:3 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their life, but it never really sinks in until it’s so close to home and this was about inspiring Dave and giving him positive focus as well as raising as much as possible to hit back at cancer on behalf of my brother and many others. Dave is 35 with a beautiful wife Mandy and two children Molly (2) and Ben (9 months), has never smoked and has always been fit so it just hits home it could be anyone of us facing this horrible fight.'
Andrew and Mike have already raised a staggering £4000 and are both focused on raising even more to support countless people affected by cancer so if you would like to make a donation then please have a look at their fundraising page www.virginmoneygiving.com/spacemonkey
Every day 29 people in West Yorkshire hear the words ‘you have cancer’. Macmillan Cancer Support is here to help those people and provide the support they may need to help them continue their everyday lives. Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will face and the feelings of isolation and loneliness that so many people experience make it even harder. But you don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with you every step of the way.
