Some of the 'Channel' swimmers present a cheque to Macmillan's Sharon Battersby
The last six months have seen 22 children from a local swimming club take to the water at Haden Hill Leisure Centre in Cradley Heath to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The children, aged between 8 and 15 who train across three swimming groups swam the distance of the English Channel – totalling a fantastic 38,625 metres!
The children raised over £1,400 through sponsorship for their challenge and decided to donate half of the money raised to Macmillan Cancer Support. They kindly chose Macmillan in memory of one of their ex-lead teachers, Brian Sherwood, who sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer two years ago and was an instrumental figure in the swimming club.
On the 22 April, the children were presented with their certificates and medals from Brian’s widow Lillian, to recognise their achievement of completing the sponsored challenge and the club presented a cheque for a fantastic £716 to Macmillan Fundraising Manager, Sharon Battersby.
On the night, the Junior Swimming Coach, Graham Short, kindly made a further donation to take the total to an amazing £1,000. So a massive thank you to everyone who took part in the challenge and raised such a great about for Macmillan!
