Shakespeare Spring 100
On Sunday 1 April 2012 over 300 riders took to their bikes to raise money in a brand new event for Macmillan
April Fools Day, and the morning dawned crystal clear and -3C frost. Not a breath of wind and the promise of another beautiful day ahead.
By 7am the Stratford-upon-Avon Park and Ride was buzzing. Bang on 8am Rob Gullen, Shakespeare 100 organiser briefed the first wave of riders and the field was away, on time and keen to spin the chill out of their legs. All participants rode off into the Warwickshire countryside at a decent pace, most of them clearly riding harder than normal to try to warm frozen hands and feet. Half way round the course the riders were treated to the legendary Barton feed station. Rumour has it that the Shakespeare 100, 100 miler in September is always fully subscribed because the cakes, sandwiches, salads and other goodies at Barton are the best on the English sportive scene.
All participants were met at the finish with a big congratulations by ride supporters and treated to medals and much appreciated water and bananas. One participant said: ‘Overall, an enjoyable and challenging early season event run on a well planned and traffic free course through some of Englands finest countryside, with panoramic views in all directions.' All the money raised from the event will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support and will go a long way to provide the practical, emotional and financial help desperately needed by people effected by cancer.
Anyone wanting to take part in this event and can’t wait until April 2013 can do so on 9 September 2012 in the Shakespeare 100, a great sportive experience with enough to test the hard riders, but accessible for those new to the world of sportives.
