On 23 June James Golding and Sean Newman will set off on a 3,500 mile bike ride across America from Los Angeles to Miami. They aim to raise £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and other charities.
In November 2008, James, aged 28, was diagnosed with cancer. Doctors found a tumour 11.5cm in diameter between his spine and kidney. This was followed by Septicemia and Peritonitis. Given just a 10% chance of survival James lost 7.5 stone (105lb) and weighed only 7 stone (98lb). When he came round from being in a coma he was unable to walk or even lift his head off the pillow. James found Macmillan to be a massive source of support for both himself and his family during his journey.
After nine months in hospital including chemotherapy and nine operations, James was finally given the all clear on 23 July 2009. To mark the 1st anniversary of that day James and Sean will be crossing the finishing line after completing a gruelling 3,500 mile bike ride through challenging terrain and extreme temperatures.
To put this challenge into perspective, the Tour de France, which is acknowledged as one of the toughest sports events in the world is 2,200 miles. This extreme challenge is often completed over three to six months, yet James and Sean aim to complete the distance in just 30 days. They will average around 120 miles a day and cycle for 10 hours every day.
