Service Design Principles Agreed for Sussex Centre

A set of principles have been agreed as a guide for the development of services for the Sussex Centre.

Service design principles have been agreed to guide the development of the services at the Support Centre. These set out that all services must:

• be available to everyone affected by cancer, across Sussex, throughout their cancer journey
• be based on evidence of need and the voice and experiences of people affected by cancer in Sussex
• be flexible to meet individual people’s information and support needs
• offer a safe, welcoming and friendly environment for users and staff
• empower people affected by cancer so they can move forward
• treat patients, colleagues, volunteers, carers and visitors in the way we would like to be treated ourselves
• embrace diverse, disabled and hard to reach groups
• work closely with the NHS, voluntary and statutory organisations to provide the best integrated and comprehensive support
• be guided by, and contribute to, the achievement of Macmillan’s 9 Outcomes.

We believe that achieving these principles will mean people affected by cancer will say that the Support Centre’s services:

• ae welcoming and accessible to me
• respect my privacy and dignity
• support my comfort and well being
• listen to me and offer me choice and personal control
• help me understand my cancer, so I make good decisions
• support those around me
• empower me to help myself and ensure I know who else can help me
• enable me to enjoy life, feel part of a community and be inspired to give something back.
