Gibbs and Dandy team with volunteer Shirlyn Grover
Employees at Gibbs and Dandy in Woking held a trade day on 16 April, including a big raffle to raise funds for Macmillan.
The Woking-based builders merchants decided to support Macmillan due to so many people being affected by cancer and their desire to give something back. Staff put out collection boxes and encouraged customers to buy tickets for the raffle, with the top prize being a mountain bike donated by a supplier.
Shirlyn Grover from the Woking Fundraising Group for Macmillan also came along to lend her support and talk to customers about the charity. As Tommy Staines, Shop Supervisor explains, 'So many of us here at work have been affected by cancer in some way or another and we decided as a team we would like to do something to help others who face the tough fight. Macmillan Cancer Support offers so much support to cancer patients and their families that it seemed an easy choice to make.'
The collection tins and raffle raised £515, exceeding their original target of £500, which is enough to pay for a Macmillan nurse for 20 hours of support to cancer patients and their families.
Helene Poursain, Surrey Fundraising Manager states, 'We are so grateful to Tommy and the staff at Gibbs and Dandy for organising the day for Macmillan and for all their customers for being so generous. What they have raised in one day is fantastic and with 98% of Macmillan’s money coming from donations, this support is so vital to allow us to continue our work.'
