Helen at the summit of Mount Kinabalu
Helen Bennet flew to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, climbed the highest mountain in Southeast Asia, Mount Kinabalu, commenced a two-day cycle through the Crocker Range, a distance of over 110 miles, and finally completed a white water raft on the Kiulu River, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The trip lasted 11 days including flights and Helen soldiered on despite breaking two toes whilst rafting down the Kiulu River managing to raise £989.75.
Helen said: “I will be forever grateful to Macmillan after the treatment of my cousin William Hunter who died from cancer in February 2011. Macmillan nurses would visit him twice a day to ensure that he and his wife Mhairi were cared for and all of their questions and worries were dealt with. My neighbour Roy James also passed away a few years ago and again Macmillan supported him and his wife immensely.”
Beverley Smith from Macmillan Cancer Support said: “Helen has raised a fantastic amount of money for Macmillan. The money raised will make a huge difference to the lives of people affected by cancer in Staffordshire. Helen should be very proud of her achievement.
"Macmillan cancer support provides practical, medical, emotional and financial support to people affected by cancer. This would not be possible without the hard work and fundraising efforts of local people, such as Helen, as we rely on 96% voluntary donations for our income. We are extremely grateful to Helen and very proud of her completing this immense challenge.”
