Sue's son Paul died after a battle with a rare form of cancer, a bone cancer called Ewing's Sarcoma.
In September 2003 Paul was due to take his place at university to study business and media. In August of that year he was diagnosed with a cancer that was not only to rob him of his place at university but also his life. On 14 November 2004 Paul died aged 19 years.
In March 2006, the month of Paul's 21st birthday Sue, with the support of family and friends, launched The Paul Stevenson Memorial Fund. Its aim was to raise £132,000.00 in three years to fund a Macmillan Nurse Specialist for adolescents and young adults in Leicestershire.
At the time Paul had cancer there was a gap in support for adolescents and young adults and Sue is in no doubt that if the Macmillan Nurse Specialist had been there for Paul it would have made a huge difference for him. After celebrating the third anniversary of The Fund in March 2009 the fundraising group has raised over £132,000.00 and the Nurse Specialist is in post.
After more than three years, fundraising is now a part of Sue’s life. To make sure that this valuable experience is not lost Sue, with the support of her friend Janet Chinn, is undertaking the role of Volunteer Coordinator for Macmillan.
The role aims to grow the number of fundraisers and volunteers supporting Macmillan. To create the feeling of a fundraising team within the community, through regular communication, meetings, get togethers and sharing good practice.
Overall the aim of the team of volunteers will be to raise awareness of the services Macmillan provides and increase income so that more and more people affected by cancer can receive valuable support.
