A golf day at the renowned Mid Sussex Golf Club on Friday 15th June saw 84 keen golfers compete for prizes, finished with a dinner and auction to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and the new £3.7 million appeal for The Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre.The golf event which was organised by Dax Garside originally from Haywards Heath and now living in Otford, Kent, came about as a result of his own personal battle with cancer. Dax was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year aged just 40 years old. As a result of surgery to remove a tumour from his thyroid gland and trachea, Dax was left unable to speak and work. With a new born baby and wife on maternity leave, his battle wasn't unfortunately just with his cancer but also with struggling to cope financially and practically. Luckily Macmillan Cancer Support were there to provide advice and support to help Dax and his young family get back on their feet and allow him to concentrate his strength on getting better. As Dax explains: "Macmillan has been a tremendous help to me and my family with practical advice, financial guidance and emotional support. I promised myself that as soon as I was strong enough I would do something to raise money for Macmillan and help them make a difference to the families of cancer patients in the UK, just like they did for mine."True to his word, Dax along with his close friend Andrew Smith from Mid Sussex Golf Club, with the assistance of David Metcalfe, a member of Macmillan's Mid Sussex Fundraising Group worked hard to pull off an enjoyable and successful day to make a positive difference to the lives of people living with cancer in Sussex.
