Volunteers receiveing their award from the Mayor of Eastleigh
Volunteers at the Macmillan Solutions at One Community project in Eastleigh have had their dedication recognised.
They have been awarded certificates from the Mayor of Eastleigh for performing a variety of roles, from gardening and shed-building to helping out with shopping or just providing a sympathetic ear and a cup of tea.
Michael and Linda Marshall both received awards, they said, ‘Cancer has touched our lives with Michael battling cancer himself so we know cancer is a frightening diagnosis to all concerned, and it’s often hard for people to talk about worries and fears to family and friends as they are too close.
Helping people through their battle with cancer helps us both with our journey forward, and for our contribution to be recognised by the Mayor gave us both a great feeling of recognition in itself and for all the other volunteers there on that day.’
The project was set up by Macmillan in July 2010 in partnership with One Community, a charity who provide community services delivered by volunteers. The project is an emotional, practical and financial support service for people affected by cancer, including friends, family and carers.
Sharon Parkes, the Macmillan Solutions Coordinator says ‘We help clients with practical and emotional support and also grants of up to £250. One client used it to purchase a reclining chair so she could sleep next to her husband’s hospital bed. This money is often vital in easing some of the financial pressure a cancer diagnosis can bring and restoring quality of life.’
