Macmillan works with the NHS and other health and social care partners to improve the lives of people affected by cancer today. In Essex there are currently over 100 Macmillan health and social care professionals.
These include Macmillan nurses, doctors, dieticians and occupational therapists. They use their expert knowledge to help people understand and manage their symptoms and side-effects.
People living in Essex also benefit from the £1.2 million Macmillan Care and Treatment Centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn, which was set up in 2002.
To meet the growing need for our services, we aim to provide additional nursing staff as well as a dedicated service to support people with lung cancer.
People living with cancer tell us that money worries come second only to worries about their health. Our local Macmillan Welfare Rights Service (developed in partnership with the CAB) helps people access the financial help they are entitled to.
Since starting up in July 2007, the benefits service has helped over 4700 patients become better off by over £1 million in benefits.
In 2010, Macmillan Cancer Support gave a total of £237,558 in grants to 705 people throughout Essex. These grants help people cope with the extra costs that living with cancer can bring, including increased heating bills, travel to and from hospital for treatment, and extra bedding.
For more information on the benefits service please email welfare.benefits@nhs.net |or phone 01268 448 517.
Macmillan offers a range of information services across Essex. And during 2010, our Mobile Information Unit visited several locations across the county giving the public quick and easy access to free cancer information and support.
