160 people took part in Macmillan Cancer Support’s first ever Whitby Walk in May, and so far over £15,000 has been raised for the charity.
As well as having a great day out, many of those taking part in the 13 mile long walk across the Whitby coastline were doing it for someone they love, standing shoulder to shoulder with others who felt the same.
Macmillan's Yorkshire Coast fundraising manager Sally Millington said: '2012 is the first year that Macmillan has held the Whitby Walk and the event has turned out to be a roaring success, with the funds raised far exceeding our initial expectations. We enjoyed beautiful weather, great company and all to raise money for local people affected by cancer. Every step these walkers took will help fund the Macmillan therapists, nurses and support line workers who make sure people living with cancer have the best team in their corner, every step of the way.'
'Macmillan would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part in the Whitby Walk 2012 and encourage others to sign up to another of the Miles for Macmillan walks, or host their own. We would also like to thank everyone who so generously gave up their time volunteering on the day to make it such a success.'
The Endeavour Rotary Club were delighted to help with the administration of the Macmillan Whitby Walk on 12 May. In 2011 the club supported Macmillan by organising a sponsored walk that raised £2,500 for the charity, and the important service they provide is still close to the hearts of all members.
Endeavour organiser, Ruth Durbridge, said, "For 2012 we wanted to help in a different way, so when Macmillan colleagues suggested we run the registration desk and marshalling points we jumped at the chance. Three members completed the 13-mile walk, too. We're proud to have contributed to the event in a variety of ways and look forward to continuing our efforts for Macmillan in the Whitby area in the future."
The Whitby Walk is one of over fifty five fabulous Miles for Macmillan walks organised with support from Boots UK. The charity is hoping to raise £1.8million from all the walks, which will help fund local Macmillan services such as the Macmillan nurses, doctors and specialists in the North Yorkshire area.
Macmillan Cancer Support and Boots UK are inviting people to enjoy the great outdoors and get active tohelp improve the lives of people in their community living with cancer.
