Luv to Danz group July 2011
Exeter line dancing group Luv to Danz has presented Macmillan Cancer Support with a cheque for £2,000 after members voted to donate a sizeable portion of the group’s profits to the charity.
Luv to Danz meets every Tuesday at Wonford Community Hall in Exeter and donates its profits to charity on a twice-yearly basis. Organiser and dance teacher Monica Varnell explained: ‘The group has been going for 15 years, and has become a part of the community. Every week we each pay £3 and once the money has built up we hold a ballot, giving our members two votes each to decide who to donate the money to.’
On the donation to Macmillan, Tony and Pippa Chiswell, who used to run a shop selling line dancing clothes and attend Monica’s classes to keep fit and have fun, said: ‘Macmillan is close to everyone’s hearts. Everybody knows someone who is affected by cancer.’
Macmillan’s Mary Thomas, who accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity, said: ‘We are so grateful to the group for choosing us, especially since this is a our centenary year. It’s astonishing how much money they have raised.'
'This is such a boost for Macmillan, we are part way through a £2.5million investment in cancer care in Devon and are 99% dependent on donations from the public. The thrill when you pick up the phone and someone tells you they want to make a donation like this is wonderful.'
