Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning Friday 28 September 2012
A student sits in a bath of coffee beans to launch South Yorkshire’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning Event.
Macmillan fundraisers spent the day sat in a bath of coffee beans in Meadowhall on the Wednesday 1 August. This unusual launch encountered amused reactions from all those who saw it, helping Macmillan generate interest for its flagship event The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.
The charity is appealing for 1000 people to hold coffee mornings either at home, work, school or in the community across South Yorkshire to raise over £150,000 to support local people affected by cancer.
In 2012, the charity is raising money to fund existing posts and services, but also to funds a new information and support project that aims to improve the quality of life for older people living with cancer in the city and a colorectal cancer programme which will support patients after treatment.
Lauren King, 20, a college student from Wisewood braved the bath of coffee beans, making a ‘pleasant change’ from the bath of maggots she sat in last year for the charity.
Lauren said: 'It’s very important to me that Macmillan can continue to help people. Macmillan nurses helped my nan in the last few days of her cancer journey, and helped to make her life more comfortable. Nan was diagnosed with lung cancer 10 weeks before she died, and Macmillan nurses took over her care when she came home, which helped everyone cope at such a tough time.'
On the challenge of sitting in a bath of coffee beans for a few hours, Lauren added: 'I didn’t mind doing the Bath of Maggots last year, but I actually really don’t like the smell of Coffee so I wasn’t really looking forward to it.'
Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Sheffield, Rob Turner, said: 'One of the great things about this event is that it’s very flexible. We give all our hosts a fundraising pack and lots of ideas but whether they choose to have a coffee morning on the official event day, a cocktail evening at the weekend or a quiz event the week after is up to them.'
He continues: 'All we want is for people to do something they enjoy with people they want to spend time with while raising some money for Macmillan. Every pound raised by those taking part in events like World’s Biggest Coffee Morning helps us be there for someone with cancer when they need us most.'
