Macmillan Cancer Support wants this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning to be the biggest ever, when it takes place on Friday 28 September. The charity is appealing for 750 individuals and organisations in Derbyshire to help it raise over £140,000 – by drinking coffee and eating cake.
The charity is hoping 100 coffee mornings will take place across Chesterfield, which could raise £25,000 to help local people affected by cancer. Alongside existing posts and services, the charity is trying to raise money in 2012 to fund a new Acute Oncology Cancer Nurse Specialist based at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
Pam Wright from Brimington Common raised a fantastic £1833.14 from her coffee morning last year and is urging locals to beat her total.
Pam said: 'My father died of cancer in 1972 and I feel like I’ve got to do what I can. I don’t think you truly know what a wonderful job Macmillan do until you need them and as nearly everyone who helps at my event has been affected by cancer and it makes us all the more determined. It is a real team effort and I couldn’t do it without them, my husband especially.'
Pam’s Coffee Morning takes place at Brimington Bowls Club, where bowls enthusiasts compete for the Derek Heaton Memorial Rose Bowl. This trophy has a special link to the day as it was kindly donated by Paul Heaton, Derek’s son, after he lost his father to cancer.
Pam commented: 'It feels great for us all to know that we are helping to fund a Macmillan nurse. They support local people suffering with cancer. It’s nice to say to people we have funded a nurse, knowing the great work they do in Chesterfield.'
Across the UK Macmillan hopes to raise a massive £10.7m from the event, beating its £10m total from last year.
Macmillan’s fundraising manager for Chesterfield, Rob Turner, said: “One of the great things about this event is that it’s very flexible.
'All we want is for people to do something they enjoy with people they want to spend time with while raising some money for Macmillan. Every pound raised by those taking part in events like World’s Biggest Coffee Morning helps us be there for someone with cancer when they need us most.'
