We then ask you to pledge to raise a minimum sponsorship of £575 of which you should aim to send £195 to Macmillan Cancer Support three months prior to the event. The outstanding balance must be with us within one month of the event taking place.
At least 65% of the £575 minimum sponsorship will be treated as a donation to Macmillan. If you raise over £575 the entire surplus will benefit the charity.
The group will be made up of between 50 and 80 men and women from all backgrounds, abilities and ages, although you must be 18 or over to take part. While some take part with friends, most people come on their own, so it’s a great way of meeting new people.
You will need a day pack to hold any equipment – extra fleece and wet weather gear, drinks and packed lunch, snacks etc - needed during the hike.
Climbing Ben Nevis is a realistic challenge for people of an average fitness level. However, this is a tough hike, so if you do not already walk on a regular basis you will need to undertake some training during the weeks leading up to the event. A full training program will be included in your fundraising pack.
Everyone on the challenge is required to complete a self-certified medical questionnaire, which will be provided in your fundraising pack.
The mountains that make up the Ben Nevis range are stunning on a good day but the weather can change rapidly, so you need to be prepared for cold and wet conditions. It is likely that the top will be covered in both snow and cloud at some point in the day.
Your meals will be provided at the hotel and a packed lunch for the day of the climb. You may want to bring some extra snacks or energy drinks/sweets especially if you have special dietary requirements.
Many people will choose to drive directly to our hotel in Fort William. However, for those taking public transport, Macmillan will provide a coach transfer from Glasgow Central Station to our hotel in Fort William on the Friday to make things a little easier for you. We will return by coach to Glasgow Central Station on the Sunday after breakfast.
The coach will leave Glasgow Central Station at approximately 3pm on the Friday and will return to Glasgow Central station by approximately 1.30pm on the Sunday. Please take these times into consideration when booking your journeys to and from Glasgow. We will confirm exact details nearer the time of the challenge.
This trip is solely organised for the purpose of raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support so we are unable to accommodate anyone who is not a fundraising participant.
The hike is straightforward and keeps mostly to a well-trodden path. However the route is fairly steep throughout and crosses a more challenging terrain of rocks and scree as you get higher up. The challenge will be strenuous but the scenery and sense of achievement will be well worth the effort.
