Day by day itinerary

Day 1: Fly from London – Bucharest – Sinaia

Depart London, bound for Romania. We arrive at Bucharest International Airport and transfer by bus to the mountain resort of Sinaia in the Carpathian Mountains.  We will set up camp and have a detailed briefing about the trek ahead.

Day 2: Sinaia – Pestera

We begin our first day in the Carpathians by taking a chair lift part way up the mountain before we start our climb on foot to the mountain hut 'Cabana Miorita' at 1,987m. If the weather is good we will continue up to the hut at Varful cu Dor at 2,030m, almost twice the height of Ben Nevis! From here we head down into Lalomita Valley towards Bolboci Lake at 1,400m and on to the village of Pestera. 

There will be a chance to explore the Ialomita Monastery built at the entrance to a vast natural cave network and a church dating back to the sixteenth century.

Walk approximately 7-8 hours

We will continue on to Caraiman Cross or Hero's Monument at the summit of Costilla Peak at 2,498m. This is a huge cross built to commemorate those who perished in the First World War. From here we head down to lower ground at Piatra Arsa and camp in the valley.

Walk approximately 6 hours

Day 4: Piatra Arsa – Cabana Omu

This is a beautiful day of walking, heading to the highest point in the Carpathians, Cabana Omu at 2,507m. This mountain hut is built into the natural rock and from it the panoramic views are amazing. The rolling hills and moorland that we cross in the morning give way to more rugged mountain scenery and we enter a region of steep sharp peaks. The scenery is breath-taking all day and we camp high up in the remote area.

Day 5: Cabana Omu – Bran Castle

We set off from Omu Cabin through stunning steep gorges in one of the area's most beautiful national parks and may catch a glimpse of brown bears along the way. We head for Bran, the final destination of our trek where we will explore Bran Castle, Dracula's house, built to protect the frontier point on the border with Transylvania. 

At the end of the day we will transfer 30km to our hotel in Brasov where we will enjoy a meal with traditional music to celebrate our achievements.

Day 6: Bucharest – London

After an early start we transfer to Bucharest where we will have a few hours to explore and soak up the sights and sounds of this vibrant city.  In the afternoon there is a short transfer to the airport for our return flight home, arriving in London that evening.
