Depart London bound for Reykjavik. We arrive at Keflavik international airport and transfer by bus to our hotel in Reykjavik, where we will have a detailed briefing about the trek ahead.
After an early breakfast we transfer by coach to the base of Mount Hekla and spend 3 hours trekking around the volcano area to discover the lava-flows resulting from the last eruption, which took place in Spring 2000. From there we transfer by bus to Landmannahellir where we camp for the night.
Walk approx 3 hours
We start trekking with great views of the nearby table mountain, of Lodmundur, formed in a volcanic eruption beneath an earlier icecap. The magnificent lakes and lava-fields of Dómadalshraun dominate the beautiful route we follow to the multicoloured mountains of Landmannalaugar. We may have a chance to relax in hot springs at the end of the day.
Walk approx 6 hours
From Landmannalaugar we move on over the Hrafntinnusker plateau at 800m, a strange landscape where countless jets of steam and hot springs burst from below ground. Then the descent begins, heading south over rolling ridges of solidified lava before dropping steeply down to the Álftavatn valley – the views are tremendous. We camp at Álftavatn Lake.
Walk approx 8 hours
We continue on our route through this striking landscape to Hattfell. Our route takes us along the Kaldaklofkvísl River to a desert of black ash devoid of vegetation, eventually reaching the Entujökull glacier. We continue on to the deep canyon of the Markarfljót River and make camp beside the Hattfell mountain.
Breaking camp we set off again heading to Thórsmörk continuing along the spectacular Markarfljót's canyon, which is over 100 metres deep in places. We continue into Thórsmörk glacial valley surrounded by three icecaps, Myrdalsjökull, Eýjafjallajökull and Tindfjallajökull.
Walk approx 7 hours
On our final day of trekking we hike out of the Thórsmörk valley along the Krossa river. The scenery is spectacular and there is a chance to see a hidden valley along the way. We finish at a glacial lake below a solitary finger of the mighty Eýjafjallajökull glacier. We cross the glacial melt water river before meeting the vehicles and traveling back to Reykjavik for our evening celebration.
Walk approx 4 hours
There will be a chance to explore the magnificent city of Reykjavik and take in some sights, or perhaps just take the opportunity to relax and rest our aching limbs!
Transfer to Keflavik international airport and return to the UK.
