The challenge will be tough at times, but you'll return with a real sense of achievement and 50 new friends. Find out exactly what this ten day challenge entails...
Fly from London to Havana. Transfer to our hotel where we enjoy an evening briefing about the incredible challenge to come. Night in hotel.
After a good sleep we have the opportunity to explore the beautiful historical city of Havana. We then drive away from the hustle and bustle of this vibrant city and out into the Escambray Mountains where we will prepare ourselves for the start of the our trek across this beautiful country. Night in hotel.
A short ferry transfer takes us across the lake to the southern tip of the Hanabanilla Reservoir and the start of our trek. We begin trekking upstream through beautiful shady forests following the path of the Rio Guanayara. Today’s stunning route passes several cascading waterfalls and bathing pools before reaching our camp and our first night under canvas and the star filled sky.
Approx hours of trekking 6hrs, 18km
After a hearty breakfast we set off on small mule tracks, climbing 400m up through lush orange and mango orchards. After a brief stop to take in the stunning scenery we continue climbing through coffee plantations, affording great views back down to the reservoir. We then descend steeply and continue on to El Sirio for a welcome drinks stop before lunch. The afternoon is spent climbing gently up to Codina and our second night camping.
Approx hours of trekking 7-8hrs, 21km
We head out from camp along the small path known locally as the Encantos de la Codina. Passing through more coffee plantations we continue down to La Batata, a subterranean river at the foot of a lush green valley. Continuing on we enter a beautiful wooded forest before reaching our camp near the beautiful nature reserve of Topes de Collantes.
Approx hours of trekking 5-6 hrs, 14km
After breakfast we head to the spectacular Caburni Falls following the Rio Caburni to its confluence with the Rio Vegas Grande. This awesome sight inspires us on to perhaps the toughest ridge of our trek up to the Rio Grande Falls. We celebrate our morning’s achievement with a well deserved lunch, washed down with some freshly squeezed sugar cane juice. Surrounded by the reserves’ caves, rivers, falls, canyons and natural pools we climb steeply towards Pico de Potrerillo standing at 3080ft (972m). Finally we dip down into the valley at the end of the day to our evening campsite.
Approx hours of trekking 9hrs, 22km
We set off on our final day of trekking along a hillside path, set high above the valley floor. We encounter some steep climbs en-route but as we reach the top we are rewarded with the stunning views down to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Trinidad and our first glimpse of the azure blue sea. As we descend through rural farmland we stop for lunch in a local farm before heading to the Cabellero waterfall and its surrounding crystal clear pools. There is a chance for a refreshing dip and time to reflect on our incredible achievement. Night in a hotel.
Approx hours of trekking 6-7hrs, 15km
A free day to relax on the beautiful white sandy beaches or to explore the delights of Trinidad before getting together in the evening for a well deserved celebration meal. Night in hotel.
