My name is Debbie Smith.

I'm the manager of the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre.

I'm part of the Macmillan team at the hospital.

And I've been in this role now since August last year, 2010.

A typical day can involve anything.

Anybody can come in very distressed, they might just have been given bad news.

They may have somebody on the wards, a relative, a loved one

and so they are very distressed from that.

So they come in here, a bit of a safe haven.

Our role is to support and inform.

We have all the Macmillan cancer information here,

which is reliable, accurate and up to date,

so they can access all that information.

We don't want to overload people, we're there to go at their pace.

It's their journey, not mine.

I just feel that everybody needs information, they need support.

Particularly with an illness that is frightening, it's worrying,

not just for the patient, but for the family. We should be there for people.

Macmillan are fantastic at being there for people.

It's everything from benefits, to job advice,

people are needing some help with money,

with possibility they may not be able to work for some time.

We have support from psychologists, counsellors,

everything you can think of we try and do

to help somebody with cancer and live, and try and get back to normal,

or a new normal.

It's the everyday living with cancer we can support,

we help everybody and anybody.

It's just being there for somebody,

because sometimes they don't want to talk to family, they don't want to talk to loved ones, they don't want to upset them.

Please, don't be nervous, that's what we're here for.

We're here for everybody, just step in the door.

It's very safe, nothing nasty is going to happen in here.

It's not clinical, it's confidential and most of all friendly and we do a brilliant cup of tea.

So please do come in.
