Many people with cancer find that there are times when they’re not hungry and don’t feel like eating.

Here are some tips to help you if your appetite is poor.

Eat small amounts of food as often as you can.

Why not try eating small portions from a small plate?

This can make the thought of eating a meal a bit easier.

Try to eat foods that are high in energy, such as ice cream, milkshakes and yoghurt.

Full fat varieties contain the most energy.

Drink plenty. Drink as much fluid as you can between meals, but only a little at meal times.

Fluids can make you feel full up more quickly.

A small alcoholic drink before a meal, such as sherry or brandy may help boost your appetite.

Dietitians are experts in dietary and nutritional problems.

Why not ask to see one at your hospital?

If you’re at home, your GP will be able to arrange this for you.

Nutritional supplements can help increase the amount of energy you’re getting.

They come as drinks and as powders that can be added to your food.

You can buy them from a chemist, or you can ask your doctor to prescribe them.

You could also speak to your doctor about medicines that can help boost your appetite.

When you have cancer your appetite often changes and you may have good days and bad days.

Make the most of the good days by eating more and treating yourself to your favourite foods.
