Travelling to and from hospital can be expensive, especially if you are undergoing treatment on a daily basis, over a period of weeks. The costs quickly add up, but there is help available.
Follow the links below for details of help available and how to access it:
Sarah was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma a few months ago. She was due to start a course of chemotherapy at a regional hospital but was concerned about the travel costs, as getting to the hospital involves a two-hour bus journey in each direction.
Before her cancer diagnosis, Sarah had not worked for several years due to severe depression. Her main source of income is income-related Employment and Support Allowance| and the lower rate care component of Disability Living Allowance|.
Sarah contacted a welfare rights adviser and was told about ‘passported benefits’. This means Sarah can claim the cost of her bus fares from the hospital that she attends because she's getting income-related Employment and Support Allowance. The cost of travelling to and from hospital was a worry Sarah didn’t need. The help described in this section could make your life easier, too.
