All our cancer information is written by specialist doctors and nurses. They use a wide range of sources of expert resources, including medical books and journals. A full literature search is carried out before any information is written or reviewed. UK Guidelines are also checked, and added to information when relevant. Medical textbooks are a key source of information, and the following bibliography gives some examples.
It is not a full list of the books used, and many other relevant textbooks are available. Selected references will be added to the information where appropriate. A vast number of journal articles on specific topics are also used. If you have any questions about the source from which the information is based please do contact us|.
Expert medical books and journals should be available to NHS health and social care professionals via their medical or academic libraries. Some professional organisations also operate libraries for their members (and occasionally non-members, for a fee). The NHS has paid for its staff to access some online journals and databases free, via a user name and password. Library staff can advise, but direct links to information are:
Access to the public, patients and other professionals is more difficult, although large public reference libraries may be able to order them from the British Library, for a fee. Check with your local medical library for details of any public access they allow.
Searching the PubMed database, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi|, can give short details of articles in many medical journals.
Our publications pages| include details of books, tapes and other information produced for patients and carers.
