Sign up to Go Sober For October and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support
It’s not often you can save money and raise money at the same time...by NOT doing something. But that’s exactly what the 27,000 people who have already signed up to Go Sober for October will be doing for the next 31 days. Today the ‘sober heroes’ take on their almighty abstinence challenge, friends and family (who clearly don’t believe their loved ones can go 31 days without a drop of the hard stuff) have already raised a staggering £380,000, to help Macmillan Cancer Support ensure no-one faces cancer alone.
The simple premise of getting sponsored to stay sober throughout October will see the nation gripped by talk of mocktails, Golden Tickets (which can be bought for those special occasions when you just HAVE to have a drink), absent hangovers and loosened waist belts.
And with the average Brit drinking 11.5 units of alcohol per week , equivalentto around £100 worth of alcohol, Go Sober for October have worked out that’s the same price as afternoon tea for two at the Ritz or a Red Letter day driving a Ferrari....what’s not to love?
Macmillan Cancer Support has partnered with the hugely successful Australian organisation and online fundraising campaign, Dry July, to launch the UK equivalent, Go Sober for October. More than one in three people now get cancer which, for most, will be the toughest fight they ever face. It’s a fight no one should go through alone and the Macmillan team wants to ensure no one does.

Notes to editors:
Figures based on ONS statistics which state that the average adult consumes 11.5 units of alcohol a week. This equates to two large glasses of wine and two pints of beer which in turn works out to be approximately 3,500 calories and approximately £98. This is based on a large glass of wine costing £5 and a pint of beer costing £4.50.
You must be over 18 to take part in Go Sober for October.
We advise heavy drinkers or people dependant on alcohol to speak with their GP first before signing up to Go Sober for October.
Go Sober does not encourage people to increase their alcohol consumption immediately prior to 1st October 2013, nor will it promote excessive drinking from 1st November 2013.
About Macmillan Cancer Support
More than one in three of us will get cancer. For most of us it will be the toughest fight we ever face. And the feelings of isolation and loneliness that so many people experience make it even harder.
But you don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with you every step of the way.
We are the nurses and therapists helping you through treatment. The experts on the end of the phone. The advisers telling you which benefits you’re entitled to. The volunteers giving you a hand with the everyday things. The campaigners improving cancer care. The community there for you online, any time. The supporters who make it all possible.
Together, we are all Macmillan Cancer Support.
