Newly-diagnosed bowel cancer patients in England will be able to see how other patients rated their hospital, thanks to a new easy to use internet tool created by Macmillan Cancer Support. This tool will offer bowel cancer patients for the first time ever access to detailed information about their local hospitals so they’re able to make an informed decision about undergoing treatment, and where to have it.
Ciarán Devane, Chief Executive of Macmillan Cancer Support, says:
“More people are being given the option to choose where to have treatment – and thanks to Macmillan’s tool, bowel cancer patients will be able to make that decision based on information from people in exactly the same position as them. “We want to drive standards up in hospitals. Allowing patients to see how their nearby hospitals are rated by others who have fought the same illness as them makes this not only a valuable information tool but it’s also deeply reassuring at what can be a very confusing time.”

Bowel cancer patients can enter their postcode and choose up to three hospitals to compare and see feedback from other patients ranging from whether they felt they were treated with dignity to the number of emergency admissions and how high the car parking charges are.
For many, it will confirm that their local hospital has given adequate support to other patients. If they find this is not the case, they can talk to their healthcare professionals about any concerns they have or look at other nearby hospitals and consider having treatment there.
This tool is easy to read and, in line with the Department of Health’s The power of information strategy, is specifically giving cancer patients the chance to see independent opinions from a range of sources on the hospital where they will receive treatment.
After an initial six-week trial, starting 21st June Macmillan Cancer Support hopes to introduce the tool for other specific cancers and into other nations in the UK.
