Responding to NCRI research released today on the cost of lung cancer eclipsing the cost of any other cancer, Dr Siobhan McClelland, Head of Evidence of Macmillan Cancer Support, says:
“This research is vital in helping us understand the true cost of cancer to the NHS and British society – not least for all those affected by lung cancer. This is why we are delighted the report’s author, Dr José Leal, will be presenting at the Macmillan session on the economics of cancer at NCRI conference today. “Without a better understanding of the costs of cancer, there is a very grave danger that the NHS will not be able to adapt to and cope with the changing face and cost of cancer service provision. “It is an absolute priority for Macmillan to get to grips with the costs of cancer to everyone, but we cannot do it alone. We need the support of health economists and specialist cancer researchers to help us achieve this.”
