Commenting on the announcement by the Government that they will publish an updated Cancer Reform Strategy this winter, Ciaran Devane, Chief Executive at Macmillan Cancer Support, said:
'We are looking forward to patients being put at the heart of the new strategy and also hope there will be a focus on improving survival rates and patient experience so our services are among the best in the world. 'However, cancer is changing and this also needs to be recognised in the new Cancer Reform Strategy. There are currently two million people living with or beyond cancer but there will be four million by 2030 so we need to be planning now for the future. Cancer is no longer necessarily a death sentence and NHS and social care services need to adapt to ensure appropriate long term care is in place for cancer survivors.'
