Commenting on Government plans to invest up to £150 million in procuring a new ‘proton beam therapy’ cancer service, Professor Jane Maher, Chief Medical Officer at Macmillan Cancer Support, said:
‘Plans to invest in a new national ‘proton beam therapy’ service is fantastic news for cancer patients. ‘As more people survive cancer, breakthroughs are not just about curing cancer but also about reducing the long-term damage to healthy tissues. This is particularly important for children as a large proportion of them experience long-term effects of cancer treatment.’
