Responding to the Commission on Dignity in Care for Older People report on the care of older people in hospitals and care homes, Jagtar Dhanda, Head of Inclusion at Macmillan Cancer Support, said:
“This report reinforces Macmillan’s own research into the discrimination older people experience in hospitals and care homes. Ageist attitudes have led to appalling failures in the care of older people and exposed them to inhumane treatment. “While we welcome new age discrimination laws that give more legal rights to older patients, frontline staff still need clearer guidelines on how to deliver care that ensures older people are treated with dignity and respect. “Macmillan has developed new standards of care that are based on core human values and are designed to strengthen the relationship between staff and patients. We are calling for health and social care providers to adopt these standards and for the Government to support them.”
