Commenting on the review of breast cancer screening published today in The Lancet, Jane Maher, Chief Medical Officer at Macmillan Cancer Support, says:
“Early detection of cancer saves lives, and breast cancer screening remains the best way to detect breast cancers when they are small enough to be successfully treated. Screening also detects pre-invasive breast cancer (in situ cancer) which some experts think is currently over treated. “Each case needs careful discussion, considering a woman’s particular circumstances and attitude to risk as well as the medical point of view. We think giving women more information about the potential harms of being tested is crucial so they can make an informed decision about whether to attend screening.”
