17 June 2013
The Young Lions Print Competition is held during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and it is open to an art director and a copywriter aged 28 or under. They have only 24 hours in Cannes to create a print ad.
The 2013 creative brief, set by Macmillan, was disclosed to all competitors at the beginning of the competition on Saturday 15 June. The teams then had a night to think the brief over and work between 8am and 8pm the following day to create their ad.
All work created during the competition was judged by the Press Lions jury and exhibited at the Festival.
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded to winners, with the Gold-winning team receiving its medal on stage at the Cannes Lions Awards Ceremony on Wednesday night, 19 June 2013. The winning team also wins free registration and accommodation for the 2014 Festival.
This year, 40 teams from across the world competed in the Young Print competition, most of which had won national competitions to be able to represent their own country in Cannes.
About the charity
UK-based cancer support charity Macmillan Cancer Support is proud to be the official charity partner for the Cannes Young Lions Print Competition 2013.
For the past 100 years Macmillan has been improving the lives of people affected by cancer in the UK. The charity offers practical, medical, emotional and financial support from the moment someone suspects they have cancer, throughout treatment, right up to surviving cancer and dealing with its long-term consequences, or dying from the disease. We do this through providing services across the UK such as our nurses and other health and social care professionals, our helpline and website, our information centres and our grants.
As well as providing support Macmillan campaigns tirelessly for a better deal for cancer patients and their families. This includes calling on the health and benefits systems to consider the specific needs of cancer patients, and influencing local commissioners and providers of health and social care, as well as UK Governments, to prioritise cancer care and treatment.
However with the number of people living with cancer in the UK set to double from two million to four million by 2030, Macmillan’s work is needed more than ever to ensure that no-one faces cancer alone now or in the future. The Macmillan brand is a vital force in making this a reality.
Now the second most recognised charity brand in the UK, our award winning brand enables the charity to reach and engage far more people affected by cancer. This is done by articulating the challenges they face, highlighting the help that is available to them and campaigning for change.
The challenge of the brief was to create an international advertising campaign to raise awareness of our services amongst English-speaking audiences. The campaign’s main objective was to be able to work across international boundaries with the aim of growing our audiences in these priority markets: US, Canada, Australia, and amongst English-speakers worldwide.
Hilary Cross, Director of External Affairs of Macmillan Cancer Support, says:
'I am proud that Macmillan has been chosen as the charity for this year’s Young Cannes Lions Print Competition. Our brand is well known and loved in the UK but can also offer vital support for English speakers affected by cancer across the globe. We hope this challenge will inspire competitors to create fabulous ideas to raise international awareness of the help we offer.'
The year saw the successful launch of Macmillan’s new three-year fully integrated campaign ‘Not Alone’ which inspires people to give support to the charity as well as getting help.

About Macmillan Cancer Support
More than one in three of us will get cancer. For most of us it will be the toughest fight we ever face. And the feelings of isolation and loneliness that so many people experience make it even harder.
But you don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with you every step of the way.
We are the nurses and therapists helping you through treatment. The experts on the end of the phone. The advisers telling you which benefits you’re entitled to. The volunteers giving you a hand with the everyday things. The campaigners improving cancer care. The community there for you online, any time. The supporters who make it all possible.
Together, we are all Macmillan Cancer Support.
