Responding to a new report by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland reveals that more people are having surgery for lung cancer in England, Lindsay Wilkinson, Head of Healthcare at Macmillan Cancer Support, said:
'As lung cancer is the UK’s biggest cancer killer it is great to see an increase in lung cancer patients receiving vital surgery. However there is still a wide regional variation on surgery rates owing to a lack of qualified surgeons. There needs to be an increase in surgeons with the skills to carry out this work and an increase in lung cancer clinical nurse specialists to support these patients. 'Once lung cancer surgery is available more widely it will be important to focus on minimal invasive surgery training which allows people to leave hospital more quickly and speeds recovery.'
