A whopping 808 runners braved the 26.2 mile Flora London Marathon yesterday – our biggest team for 12 years. Well done and congratulations to every single Team Macmillan runner! Your efforts will make a huge difference to people living with cancer.
Approximately 35,000 people took part in the marathon this year. Despite the heavy rain at times, thousands of spectators cheered on the runners, including those at Macmillan's very loud and very visible six supporter cheering points along the course.
Among Team Macmillan runners was Lee Dawson, who has beaten cancer twice and ran the marathon yesterday in an amazing 3hours 50minutes. Mike Taylor, whose mother and mother-in-law received care and support from Macmillan, ran the marathon in leathers for us! We also had a panda, a mum and daughter team and Michael Winslow who ran his 21st marathon for us in 10 years.
Just a few quotes from some of our runners:
'Just wanted to say a massive thanks to the team on Sunday, the cheering points really kept me going and the recovery centre was fab, I was so proud to be running for THE BEST TEAM!'
'I just wanted to say the biggest of thank you's to you all for the amazing support you gave me yesterday. It was a fabulous day despite the weather and I had a wonderful time. Particular thanks to the group on the Embankment (when I was really suffering) who shouted for me so loud that my spirit and knees were instantly lifted.'
All Team Macmillan runners received comprehensive fundraising advice and training support in the months leading up to the event. We're hoping to raise more than £1.2million in sponsorship from this fantastic event. All the money raised will help us provide the medical, emotional, financial and practical support that changes the lives of people living with cancer.
If you were inspired by the marathon yesterday, the entry ballot for 2009's marathon is already open! Log on to http://www.london-marathon.co.uk to enter the ballot.
Congratulations and thank you to all our runners and supporters.
