Over 400 blankets were knitted and, over 10 weeks, the Macmillan knitting page received 15,316 unique visitors and 48,625 page views, raising an estimated £32,000.
In 2009 Macmillan beat stiff competition from Greenpeace, the Prince's Trust and World Vision to win the NGO Department of the Year Gold Award for its work on campaigns such as Free Prescriptions and Sexual Relationships and Cancer, as well as fundraising campaigns including the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and the Big Picnic.
Gordon Brown’s announcement of free prescriptions for cancer patients in 2009 was a major victory for Macmillan’s Free Prescriptions campaign. In England this is estimated to help 150,000 cancer patients per year, saving them around £15 million.
