Writing a will helps people ensure that those they care about are looked after once they’re gone. It makes sure that everything happens as they want it to and helps to put their mind at rest.
Macmillan launched its discounted will writing service earlier this year. The service gives people affected by cancer a choice of legal professionals they can trust to help them write their will, and saves them money at the same time. While the cost of a will varies, under the scheme, the discounted price for a single will ranges from around £69.
Since the launch of the service, a large number of supporters have used it after being referred from our support line or a Macmillan professional. So thank you for signposting people to this option.
A solicitor from one of the partner organisations shares the value of the service: ‘We received instructions from a client near Manchester whose cancer has developed rapidly and who is now in a hospice. He refused to take painkilling medication until his will was signed, because he wanted to ensure his partner of 20 years received a lifetime tenancy in the house he owned. We were able to get the will drafted and signed off by the panel solicitors, and returned to him by special delivery so it could be attested and placed in storage.’
If you have the chance to mention this service, please do so, as it also has the potential to raise vital funds to support people affected by cancer. While there’s no obligation for someone to leave a gift to Macmillan when they use the service, we hope they may consider it. So far, from this service alone, Macmillan has been pledged more than £2.4 million from gifts in wills. Thank you for your continued support in pointing people towards this service.
